Can windows really help me lower my energy bills?
Yes! If your windows are more than 10 years old, you are probably losing valuable heat and/or air conditioning through them every day! How? Windows can lose heat in three major ways: through the glass, around the sides of the window and from conduction that occurs through the window frame. The end result? In the winter, you end up constantly trying to heat the air from the outside! And in the summer, your air conditioning system has to work twice as hard trying to cool it!

Today's windows contain insulating, double-paned glass that has been custom-designed to stop hot air from going in or out. In addition, if your windows are custom-made, and not standard sizes, they will be built specifically for the openings in your home. That eliminates air infiltration around the frames.

Why is UV protection important?
What's the first thing most of us apply when we head out to the beach? If we want to protect ourselves from getting a sun burn, we lather up with suntan lotion, right? It's because we know that suntan lotion provides a valuable shield against the sun's harmful ultraviolet rays.

But did you know that UV protection is also available in your windows? Low-E, a coating which can be applied to glass, significantly reduces harmful UV rays. Low-E glass is an excellent barrier against ultraviolet rays which fade carpet, furniture, draperies, and even woodwork.

How can I stop condensation or fog from forming on my windows?
Condensation, or fog, on windows is actually caused by humidity, or water vapor. Humidity is present in almost all air. When this water vapor comes in contact with a surface that is at a cooler temperature, the vapor turns to visible droplets of liquid, or condensation. (A good example of this is on a bathroom mirror after someone has taken a hot shower.)

So, how do you stop condensation? By reducing the level of humidity in your home to 20 or 30 percent, you can reduce almost all of the condensation on your windows. Some ways to do this are to:
  1. Make sure your windows are well ventilated and that air is blowing across the surface of the windows.
  2. Keep your mini-blinds open to help increase ventilation and air movement.
  3. Reduce the amount of plants near your windows.

What are the advantages of vinyl windows over wood windows?
Although wood windows are beautiful, there are many disadvantages to wood. First, wood does warp over time. That means that no matter how well your windows fit when they were first installed, you may still end up with air infiltration later! In addition, wood does require a large amount of maintenance to keep it looking good.

Vinyl windows, on the other hand, will not warp or get misshapen over time. And because the color of the vinyl goes all the way through, they make sanding, scraping and painting things of the past!

Can I replace my old windows with different styles or types?
Certainly. You may want to consult us to find the type of window that best complements your home's natural design. No matter what style or combination of styles you choose, however, we can custom-manufacture it all for you.

What about noise reduction?
Homeowners with new replacement windows say there's a noticeable reduction in the amount of noise that enters their homes. If you get your windows with argon gas, they will be even quieter. Argon gas is colorless, odorless, nonflammable, nontoxic, and above all, a safe, inert gas that is heavier than air. Not only does argon gas help to increase the energy efficiency of a window, but helps to make your home quieter as well.

Do vinyl windows require a lot of maintenance?
Because the frames and sashes are made of vinyl, you can say goodbye to painting and caulking. Your windows won't stick, and you don't have to remove storm windows in order to clean them. In fact, you can do it all from inside your home. An occasional wipe with a damp cloth will keep your windows looking like new for years to come.

What should I look for in quality vinyl siding?
  • The greater amount of UV Inhibitors, the better the siding.
  • Quality Installation.
  • A Lifetime Warranty should cover the siding. A strong warranty is not only protection for your purchase, but also an indication of the manufacturer’s confidence in its product.

How do I choose a qualified contractor?

  • Never, Ever give a contractor a down payment.
  • Ask for references from your friends and neighbors.
  • Ask the contractor if he carries the necessary licenses and insurance coverage for your state.
  • Check with your local Better Business Bureau.
  • Look on Tom Martino's Referral List at troubleshooter.com
